This story gives multiple examples of how citizens participate in their communities. Many different careers can be observed throughout this story. There are teachers, dentists, orthodontist, Girl Scout leaders, stay at home parents, and parents that work away from the home. All these characters contribute to their community in different ways and could be analyzed separately.

5.E.1.3 Explain how global patterns such as the jet steam and water currents influence locate weather in measurable terms such as temperature, wind direction and speed, and precipitation.
One event that takes place in this story is an earthquake. Out of nowhere the whole floor begins to shake and everything starts rattling. Raina's house loses power for several hours and a bridge in their city even collapses. This event could be used to discuss science and could provoke a research question: what causes earthquakes?
